Seeking Peer Mentors
Currently we are looking for interested students who would be able to enroll in the 2 credit peer mentoring course next semester, which meets Wednesday's from noon-1:50pm. It is required for selected peer mentors who successfully go through our application process to enroll in the course, as it serves are your training and education in becoming a peer mentor. The course is restricted, so you will not be able to enroll in the course, only selected peer mentors will be administratively added to the course.
The application process includes basic background information, a few self answer short responses regarding why you want to be a peer mentor, resume, and unofficial transcript. You can complete the whole application process electronically and email it to me as an attachment. FYI, your unofficial transcript can be sent electronically by using Internet Explorer, and simply copy and paste it into a Word document.
Overall, the purpose of the program is to pair second and third year peer mentors with incoming freshmen within their major in the fall of 2010 throughout their academic year. In other-words, this program is a year long commitment on part of the peer mentors, as your training will cover 2 semesters; Fall 2010 and Spring 2011. Therefore, to best serve this program interested candidates must not be scheduled for graduation until May 2011 or after.
If you are not sure what a peer mentor will do, think of programs like Big Brother, Big Sister type programs, where your paired up with a freshman in your major and you help motivate them, give them tips of the trade to be successful here at VCU, go to scheduled social events with them, help them feel connected to VCU, and much much more!
Applications are due now due Monday, April 5, by 5pm.
Please let me know if you are still interested or have any additional questions,
Feel free to forward this to your friends and I look forward to receiving your application this week.
*Note the application is in PDF format (you will not be able to type directly on this document), so if you plan to submit your application electronically by e-mail, then please contact me and I will send you an application in Word format.
